Adoption & Measure 58 in Orego essays Oregon adoptees won a nineteen month court battle to see their birth certificates, which have been sealed since 1957. U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Conner refused to continue a hold on Measure 58, an adoption rights law approved by voters in Oregon in 1998. Six birth mothers had filed law suits to prevent this. The new las is retroactive and they feared they would be open to contact from children they had given up for adoption so many years ago. That ist would upset their current lives ans their families didn't know about them giving up a child for adoption. The birth mothers argued that Measure 58 violated their constitutional right to privacy. This change is a good thing. Now oregonions have recognized that adoption should not be hidden in shame, and everyone has the right to know who their parents are. That is is a good thing to pur a child up for adoption so they can have a good home that the real parents couldn't give them. Adoption experts estimate there are about 79,000 adoptees in Oregon. The State office for Services to Children handled about 2,200 last year and estimates the new law will affect about 25,000 Oregonions. So far only 16 Oregon mothers have attached forms to their children's birth certificates saying they do not want contact. If adoptive parents, birth parents, siblings and friends are considered, there is probably not a life in oregon that is not touched by adoption. It will not be an easy road for adoptees, even with Measure58. A birth mother's real name does not always appear on the certtificate, so it's hard to locate a birth parent. It isn't just to cause trouble that adoptees want to know, they may have health problems, and want a medical history. Their are many reasons and I think it's a good thing. ...

How to use commas How to use commas Compared with pondering the placement of the much less familiar semi-colon or the enigmatic apostrophe, the ubiquitous comma might seem hardly worth worrying about. They’re ten a penny, arent they? Why not just sprinkle them at will or leave them out entirely? Unsurprisingly, we don’t recommend doing either. They may seem a common or garden item of punctuation, but – just like the elderly in society – we can learn much from commas and should treat them with respect. So, use them: Â   Â   Â  to denote a natural pause, such as if you were reading aloud Unfortunately, commas are often underrated. Â   Â   Â  after a secondary clause that’s been put at the beginning of a sentence Although the comma had been left out of the speech, he still paused for dramatic effect. Â   Â   Â  to separate items in a list My job involves typing, proofreading, answering the phone and stocktaking commas. I’m looking for a tall, dark, handsome lover of punctuation. Commas can make subtle distinctions too. Observe the nuances: Our boss, who is based in Basingstoke, will be at that seminar and Our boss who is based in Basingstoke will be at that seminar. In the first example, there is only one boss. He may be based in Basingstoke, but that is not vital information (it is ‘non-defining’). The main point is that he’ll be at the seminar. In the second example, there are presumably several bosses. But it is specifically the one lucky enough to be based in Basingstoke who will attend the seminar. We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: punctuation matters. Particularly if you want your writing to end up meaning what you meant it to.

Capital punishment - Essay Example However, the debate concerning capital punishment according to Sustein and Vermeule is merely centered on an unquestioned assumption that acts are morally different from omissions in the eye of the government, and the failure to question this assumption is a fundamental moral error. In this case, they argue that â€Å"an indefensible form of the act or omission distinction is important to some of the leading objections to capital punishment† (Sustein and Vermeule 705). Therefore, defenders of capital punishment have failed to notice the logical conclusion of their theory that capital punishment is in fact morally obligatory and not just permissible, by making the same distinction. To this end, Sustein and Vermeule suggest that on the strength of certain empirical assumptions, capital punishment may not only be permissible, but also it may be a moral requirement to discourage the taking of innocent lives, rather than for punitive reasons. Steiker critiques Cass Sunstain and Adr ian Vermeule’s argument that establishment of the validity of recent empirical studies that have associated capital punishment with a substantial deterrent effect should lead consequentialists and deontologists to conclude that capital punishment is not only morally permissible, but also morally required. Steiker (751) contends that â€Å"while the empirical evidences suggesting associations between capital punishment and considerable levels of deterrence are highly suspect, acknowledging that the government has special moral duties does not render inadequately deterred private murders the moral equivalent of government executions.† In this case, Steiker argues that executions constitute not only a purposeful moral wrong, but also a distinctive sort of injustice and acceptance of ‘threshold’ deontology does not call for a commitment to capital punishment, the proven substantial deterrence notwithstanding. In addition, Steiker suggests that Sustein and Verm eule imposes the acceptance of brutal or disproportionate punishments, and urges that not even consequentialists should be convinced with the argument that capital punishment is morally required (Steiker 786). The two articles disagree on the issue that capital punishment is morally required; whereas Sustein and Vermeule claim that capital punishment is not only permissible but also morally required, particularly give the proven empirical evidence between capital punishment and deterrence, Steiker firmly refutes their conclusion. Steiker faults Sustein and Vermeule because their conclusion automatically sanctions the acceptance of brutal and disproportionate punishments. This is because according to Steiker, capital punishment is not morally required because it is both a moral wrong and an injustice. The disagreement between Sustein and Vermeule, and Steiker is both sociological and legal in nature, particularly because whereas the former content that the government has the moral ob ligation of deterring the taking of innocent lives, the latter contend that capital punishment is morally required wrong and unjustifiable. Interview of Older Age Adults - Essay Example They had a lot to say in answer to each question or topic and would digress to relating something else if the interviewer did not insist on keeping them on track. It seems that as each one talks about a certain aspect of the past, a recollection of a related experience is triggered. The interviewee then becomes eager to relate such related event, thereby making the conversations overly long. Moreover, when all the questions have been answered, it seemed that the subjects did not want the interview to end. It was as if it would take a long time again when the subject would have somebody who will have a long conversation with him or her. The interview process resulted in the following findings, generalizations or conclusions. Older age adults past seventy years old are already well-adjusted in their status. They have already spent more than ten years as "retired" individuals and seem to have come to terms with their changed status in life, especially with regards their relationships with immediate family. They have also accepted their physical conditions, how they are no longer as strong and fit for various types of activities. Those who said that they felt a lot younger than their age are the ones who have best succeeded in coming to terms with their level of physical fitness and the limited type of activities they can pursue. One lady said she felt a lot older and that was because she was worried about her different ailments which she doesn't seem to address appropriately. Older age adults who have adjusted have also accepted how younger people are treating them, whether they feel this is different from their norm s during their times or not. They learn to accept and live with the kind of people surrounding them and learn to understand their attitudes. Another finding from the interview process is that although the subjects interviewed were quite adjusted to their old age status and able to maintain a level of happiness or contentment, they are most wanting in people to talk to. The situation of the subjects interviewed were all as part of their own families, where relatives, if there were, were of different ages. In the case of the husband and wife, they were living by themselves and only had each other. The interview brought a new person into their life for a few hours. In the case of the others, the subjects were living with family members all of younger age. They didn't really have anybody to chat with as a matter of course. They feel that their relatives only converse with them out of duty or courtesy. It also seemed to the interviewer that these subjects were being taken for granted by their immediate families. This was a sad situation for the older age adults and although it wasn't directly verbalized, somehow it could be f elt during the interview. Another finding from the interview process is the matter of dreams and their fulfillment. All the subjects interviewed could not seem to recall any life-long dream from the past that they wanted to achieve as a burning desire. They mentioned dreams that were either achieved or not achieved but are no longer dreams at the present time. It may be part of the acceptance or resignation process that they seemed to have gone through as they were getting older or adjusting to their old age, as a sort of defense mechanism to keep one

Creative Story: The Golden Sock Years after Odysseus came from his twenty year trip, Odysseus began to feel restless; he wanted to go on an adventure. He knew that his wife, Penelope would not agree to his decision to go seek the long stolen, "golden sock". To many people, this may be any ordinary sock, but to Ithica, it was different. It was the sock worn on the first person to set foot on the land of Ithica. Odysseus finally decided to go on the journey to seek the "golden sock." He snuck away leaving Penelope a note telling where he is, and what he wants to do. Him, and his hundred crew men went all the way to the Gibralter strait where he was turned around by Charybdis' funnel, and stranded on the peninsula of Hubble. He picked his best men to search the beautiful island. "Men, our objective here is to find the long gone, "golden sock". We have traveled hundreds of miles already, and we still have not come close to finding the "golden sock". I want you to look at the feet of every man on this island, hoping to see the "golden sock". This may not be easy, and we may have to fight, so I want every man to be ready to go to war," Odysseus claimed. Odysseus and his men came to a cave and were directly surrounded. They got ready to fight, but the people were only trying to find out if they were friendly or hostile. The people were called the Takol Klan. They invited Odysseus and his men for the verrano feast. The Takol Klan, that greeted them, seemed to overly excited to Odysseus. "Hey, do two of you want to come and help us set up for tomorrow's feast," Taboli said. "Sure, Odysseus, Ankortipo and I are going to go with these friendly hosts," said Amtiphorus. "Go ahead, you two, but watch your back; we don't know these people, they might have the holy, golden sock," said Odysseus. Odysseus gathered all of his men, and told them, that their main task was to look at all the men's feet, trying to seek the "golden sock". Odysseus followed the soldiers to the sitting room, and a mammoth of a beast was sitting on the couch watching T.V. He stood up and introduced himself. "My people call me Cyclops, and you can see why, I am the leader of this tribe." "My name is Odysseus, my men call me Odysseus, but you can call me Master." "Welcome Master.
